KON BACK ON TOP

NEW YORK - (Business Wire) Upfront/Konvict/SRC/ Universal
Motown multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer,
Akon burst out of the starting gates with the winningly melodic and compulsively danceable single Right Now (Na Na Na). The song is sparking up the charts in a record-setting pace thats familiar to Akons millions of fans worldwide.

Right Now (Na Na Na) is the lead track from Akons 3rd upcoming album FREEDOM. The CD is scheduled to be in stores November 25, 2008. The infectious song is the # 1 Most Added at Rhythm Crossover radio stations in its first week of release. The digital single immediately moves into the top 10 of iTunes as the most-downloaded Top Songs. FREEDOM will feature collaborations with Hip- Hops man of the hour Lil Wayne (Im So Paid) and Akons platinum artist T-Pain (Holla Holla).

Akon broke out on the music scene in 2004 with the platinum album TROUBLE that featured singles, Locked Up and Lonely. He returned in 2006 with the triple-platinum-certified KONVICTED CD. The Senegalese native broke chart history in 2007 as the first artist to simultaneously hold the #1 (I Wanna Love You) and #2 (Smack That) positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart twice. He went on to become Billboard Magazines Top Artist of 2007, the # 2 Hot 100 Producer of the Year, and # 2 Hot 100 Songwriter of the year.

Akon won the 2007 American Music Award for Best Male Soul/R&B artist and was honored three times at the World Music Awards. He has achieved gold and platinum certifications in over a dozen countries.

The 5x Grammy nominees life story has also become one of the most inspirational music sagas in recent memory, turning his life around after a troubled youth by pursuing a career in music, notching millions in albums sales since his seminal debut album Trouble.

On September 27, 2008 Akon will be on hand at the Think Pink Rock Concert event to support efforts in raising funds to benefit Memorial Sloane Kettering in NY, The Women's Center for Breast Care at Boca Raton Community Hospital in FL, among other organizations.

DOLLA KNOCKS OUT 2 PISTOLS AT BET AWARDS [NOW WITH AUDIO]

According to reports from the artist's camp, Akon's 20-year-old artist, Dolla, got into a minor scuffle with Florida rapper 2 Pistols, which resulted in 2 Pistols being knocked out.

Dolla's camp confirmed with BallerStatus.com that an altercation took place after he heard about recent public statements made by 2 Pistols claiming Dolla had "no street credibility and isn't really a rap artist from the streets."

These words stuck with Dolla. When he ran into 2 Pistols during Monday's media event, Dolla claims he confronted the rapper, which escalated into a scuffle, resulting in 2 Pistols being knocked out by "a single jab," his camp claims.

2 Pistols tells a very different story. He claims the argument was over his hit single, "She Got It" featuring T-Pain, which Dolla allegedly felt was supposed to go to him first. The Florida rapper claims the argument ended, he walked away, and then was punched. When he tried to strike back (grabbing a chair in the process), he says cops grabbed him, and Dolla and his entourage fled in the vehicles.

THE BET AWARD FOR BEST COLLABO GOES TO...

Congratulations to T-Pain who has received 5 BET Award nominations! “Kiss Kiss” has been nominated in the Viewers Choice category (VOTE BELOW) and Pain DOMINATES in the Best Collabo category for “Kiss Kiss” with Chris Brown as well as Flo Rida for “Get Low,” Kanye West “Good Life,” and DJ Khaled “I’m So Hood.” The awards are airing Live June 24th, 8pm ET/PT.

T-Pain is eyeing a Sept. 30 release for his third album, "Thr33 Ringz", which will be released by Konvict Muzik/Zomba. The first single, "Snap You Fingers" featuring Lil' Wayne, is expected to hit radio next month.

According to a Zomba spokesperson, a video for "Snap Yo Fingers" is in the works and T-Pain is currently hard at work producing the new album with Akon.

This week's Hot 100 chart boasts three songs featuring T-Pain, including Flo Rida's breakout single "Low," which sits at No. 16 after 27 weeks.

The R&B singer garnered five BET Awards nominations last week, including nods for best collaboration for his work with Chris Brown ("Kiss Kiss"), Kanye West ("Good Life") and Flo Rida ("Low").

"Epiphany," T-Pain's 2007 album, has sold 819,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

COLBY O'DONIS' 2nd official single "DON'T TURN BACK" produced by CLINTON SPARKS recently world premiered on SMASHTIME RADIO.

KARDI SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Following reports of Akon's past, SOHH caught up with new Konvict Music signee, Kardinal Offishall, to set the record straight on the allegations and to shed light onto the Canadian MC's upcoming release.

According to Kardinal, the reason Akon's criminal record doesn't reflect the troubled past the singer has depicted on wax may be because the R&B star has spent a lot of money to have his record cleared.

"When I first met Kon, I didn't know he wasn't allowed into Canada because of the criminal record that he had," Kardinal admitted. "Now he's able to travel to Canada, Australia, to all types of different places, because he spends a lot of money to have his record expunged."

"What that means is that there's no way Akon could travel unless he was able to deal with his record and get a lot of that removed," he continued, "he wouldn't be able to be such a big international artist if he didn't get it removed."

At that same time Kardinal thinks the media spends too much time dwelling on the negative.

"It doesn't matter who you are, whether you're a rapper, singer or actress it really seems that everything is just designed to try and pull people down," Kardinal explained. "The thing that I like about Akon is that it seems as if he's bulletproof because no matter what is thrown at him, he's able to deal with it."

Kardinal has a message to the media when dealing with such issues.

"Instead of worrying about how real his criminal past has been, they should report on the stuff that he's done now, providing aid to Senegal or working with Wyclef to aid folks in Haiti," he added. "They don't report on that sh*t. They just worry about how real he's keeping it and how many years he did in jail."

Kardinal will release his fourth studio album Not 4 Sale this July.

Akon’s new book will be titled Thug Politics and is the second release from C-Murder’s TRU Publishing company.

The first release from the new company was Jacki-O’s title Grown and Gangsta, which landed in book stores last month.

NEW AKON ALBUM 'ACQUITTED' COMING SOON... "FIRST WEEK OF MAY" SOON..?!

Akon says it won't be long before his new album hits the shelves.

"We're trying to get it out by the first week of May," he recently told MTV News in Los Angeles. "The album is practically done now. It's called Acquitted."

The singer is hoping the first single will feature Michael Jackson, who he just spent time working with. (While some reports say Jackson has finished recording his part for the track, it was unclear whether all the legal hurdles had been cleared as of press time.)

"It's a worldwide record," Akon said. "The record is so huge. It's too big. [Michael's] the only person I could have collaborated with. The other [songs] on the album are huge though."

Akon has so much music in his catalog that he already has a follow-up to Acquitted mapped out.

"My fourth album is called Double Jeopardy," he revealed. "I'm already on it. It's all set up. If they want all the records now, it would take me 30 days to put it together."

During his talk with MTV News, 'Kon's good friend T-Pain strolled up and began making jokes. The two are supposed to go on tour later this year with the entire Konvict Muzik team. Pain has also been in Atlanta working on an album that's set to drop in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Akon's vocal swagger can be heard on the new 25th-anniversary reissue of Jackson's Thriller, where he remixed "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."

"These records are timeless," he said. "They can go on forever. It's easy, because a lot of stuff we are doing now was taken from records back then. We're all sampling, taking ideas from melodies back then. It was real easy for me."
