Mika and Akon Were the Big Winners at the World Music Awards
The prestigious ceremony celebrated its 19th anniversary by returning home to Monaco
Akon took home three awards. The hip-hop star's worldwide record sales secured him the R&B artist award (ahead of such A list competitors as Fergie, Beyoncé, Timbaland and Rihanna). He was also crowned Africa's Best-Selling Artist and received the award for the World's Best-Selling Internet Artist. "You are witness to seeing me receive any kind of award for music the first time in my life", the singer stated.

THREE HURT IN AKON STAGE COLLAPSE
Workers building the set for the outdoor show at Emory University in Atlanta were taken to hospital after a canopy fell on top of them.
Akon, whose hits include Don't Matter and Smack That, then called off the gig, scheduled for Thursday night.
University spokeswoman Nancy Seideman said she did not know the extent of the victims' injuries.
Akon rose to fame following the release of his single Locked Up, from his 2003 debut album Trouble.
His second album, Konvicted, was released last year and earned him a Grammy award nomination for Smack That.

'THRILLER' PLANS
The King of Pop will release a 25th-anniversary edition of Thriller, including four tracks remixed by Akon, Kanye West and Will.I.Am. The songs are "Billie Jean," "The Girl Is Mine," "Wanna Be Starting Something" and "Pretty Young Thing."
The whole "Thriller" project is an attempt to resurrect Jackson’s moribund career at a time when he continues to be in financial peril. This column confirmed on Tuesday that Jackson is in hot water again. He owes a $5 million interest payment to Fortress Trust, the publicly traded hedge fund that bought his $272 million loan from Bank of America in April 2005. The payment is due on Oct. 31.

"I'LL STILL KILL" VIDEO DROPPING SOON

"I'll Still Kill" is one of the most aggressive records from Curtis, and the G-Unit bossman barks at anyone having issues with the content.
"The concept of the song was saying, 'I don't want to , but I will if I have to," he said. "That would be justifiable, wouldn't it?"
"It's pretty hectic, but I have great relationship with both guys," said the clip's director Jesse Terrero, who helmed 50's Reebok ad campaign with Manny Ramirez in addition to many G-Unit videos, including "Wanksta" and "Candy Shop." "This is big — it's like 'Bourne Supremacy meets 'Unleashed.' I threw out an idea and enjoyed it."
In the video, 50 has to handle himself in a world of trained killers.
"It's not an environment for pretty women," Akon said while kicking around a soccer ball. "This is on some assassination-type shit."
Akon also explained that he was just there to perform; the plot is all 50 Cent. 50 had high praise for his collaborator's contributions to the song.
"This collaboration, it's perfect," he said. " tones, vocally what he did on the chorus and the last portion of the record, it's great."

AKON READY TO 'SHAKE THE WORLD UP' WITH NEW CHART TOPPERS
Akon's melodic thuggin' on the airwaves has helped turn records by superstars like Gwen Stefani into harmonic hits.
Now the singer is moving into the realm of three of music's most iconic legends: Madonna, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.
"Ooh, don't even say his name twice," 'Kon joked recently in Miami, referring to Jackson. "I'm not supposed to be talking about this!"
Although he wouldn't disclose the specifics of his collaboration or collaborations with Jackson fearing the cold, swift sting of a slap from the King of Pop's signature gloved hand (or, at least, legal action), he did let MTV News in on the experience.
"He's incredible," 'Kon testified of M.J. "He's a genius. Just to be in the same room [with him], I felt everything I wanted to accomplish in life has been achieved. That aura ... that's how incredible that aura is. We about to shake the world up, man. You know how you be with somebody and you can't even explain [the feeling]? I used to sit and think, 'How does somebody sell so many records and dominate a whole business genre, to a point [where] nobody can't be a part of that without associating with you?' The way he thinks ... some artists think regional, some think national, I was thinking international. He thinks planets. It's on another level."
While 'Kon hasn't been in the studio with Madonna yet, he said he expects to "shock the world" with her Madge-esty before the end of the year.
He did say that the tracks he records with Whitney Houston will reflect her real, personal life.
"I'm starting on Whitney's project," he said. "She's the truth. She's undeniable. She's got so much to think about, sing about. This album is going to be one of the biggest albums she decided to put out. She has so much energy, so much happiness and sadness to incorporate into the album. Her voice is strong enough to deliver any message she wants to sing to the world. It's outta here."
However, it will be a while before we see another album from Akon himself — he estimates about 18 months. Plans call for three more singles to be released from his multiplatinum Konvicted LP.
The hitmaker said he does have a clear vision for the album: He wants it to be the soundtrack to a film he is spearheading inspired by the 2006 documentary "Cocaine Cowboys".
"It's the biggest movie in history," he said. "You thought 'Scarface' was crazy, this movie is a true-life story based on Jon Roberts. He was the leading pilot for the Medellin Cartel [Colombian drug traffickers]. Everything about it is real except the characters. It's about the war on drugs."

AKON STAYS DOWN WITH THE UNIT
Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna and Whitney Houston: With all those legends lined up to either finish collaborations or get in the studio for the first time with Akon, you would think his dance card would be filled and he might not have time for anybody else. Not if you're 50 Cent. 50 has the Akon collaboration on his LP Curtis, and the in-demand singer says he and Fif are going to do even more songs together.
"It's one of them records where it's almost like you get so successful, people assume you lost your street feel. You lost your edge," 'Kon, on the Miami set of Wyclef's "Sweetest Girl" video, said about "I'll Still Kill." "I'm at my highest point on the pop side, but I started with street records and still can go there. It's not a problem. 50 is the same way. It's just 50 is thinking more business now. He's thinking radio, crossover, but at any moment, he can switch up and go there. Don't get it twisted, we still will kill. SSK [SoundScan Killers] all day.
"We'd talk for hours on the telephone," he added about making the record. "At the time, I was in Europe moving crazy, he was doing his thing, getting his album together. But we'd still be on the phone like, 'Listen to this. What you think?' Shortly after the song was completed, we met face to face, gave each other a pound, gave each other a hug, like, 'N---a, we got a hit.' Now we're gonna do more records for both [our upcoming albums]. We'll swap out. Whoever's album it feel right on, that's where we gonna put it."
Are we ready for Akon the movie mogul as well? He's putting together a film called "Cocaine Cowboys" that will center on the importation of narcotics into L.A. and Miami decades ago. It's looking like his next album will be the soundtrack to the project.

AKON TO RELEASE 'KONVICTED' DELUXE EDITION AUGUST 28th
The new version also includes "Rush" featuring Kardinal Offishall, which will appear in the upcoming film "Rush Hour 3," as well as a third, as-yet-unnamed new song.
The DVD sports a documentary in which Akon visits his native Senegal, as well as videos for the album tracks "Smack That," "I Wanna Love You" and "Don't Matter."
Since its release last November, "Konvicted" has sold 2.6 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Akon is on the road internationally through mid-August and will begin a Canadian tour Sept. 15 in Vancouver.

AKON & BROS LAUNCHING NEW REALITY SHOW
is set to add television producer to his resume as he's about to launch a new reality TV show and is having his two brothers starring in.
The TV show, to be titled "My Brother's Keeper," will follow Akon's brothers as they parade around town posing as the singer and reaping the benefits that come with being a superstar. The "Smack That" singer claimed to get the idea for the show after seeing fans' reactions whenever they go out in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
"Whenever I’m not in Atlanta, they go out posing as me and everyone believes it’s actually me. It’s so crazy, because everyone seriously believes it’s me. They are going around getting VIP treatment, girls, free food at restaurants, free everything and everybody is falling for it. It’s a real life thing, which has got really out of hand in Atlanta, so I decided to take the situation and make it into my advantage by making a reality TV show out of it. They get my life, all the perks without having to put in all the hard work I do. I’m constantly working so I can’t live it, but they are out there living it."
They have yet to release details on when and where the TV show will be aired.
